South Indian Movies Which Are A Must Watch

Time to time South Indian Movies have surprised us with their exceptional and unexpected stories and movie plots. Though Bollywood movies are preferred over other regional language movies, there is so much content hidden in regional language movies that if given a fair chance to compete, it would easily surpass Bollywood. I do agree that Bollywood too makes exceptional films, but when compared to other language movies, it slightly fades away. Here is my list of South Indian Movies which are a must watch:

1.Nayakan

Kamal Haasan is a perfectionist and we see that in this well made film. Mani Ratnam on the other hand is a magician. Sakthivel, a young boy, leads a comfortable life until he witnesses his father's brutal murder. Thereafter, he stabs the officer responsible for it and runs away to Mumbai to become a feared gangster. Acting of Kamal Haasan and direction of Mani Ratnam are on top form in this movie. It has got 8.7/10 IMDB ratings and is a must watch movie if you want to pursue interest in South Indian Movies.

2. Anniyan

Chiyaan Vikram, known as Aamir Khan Of South Indian Cinema is a true example of acting brilliance. Vikram plays the role of Ramanujam, who suffers from multiple personality disorder, works as a lawyer by day and a vigilante at night. He uses tips from the 'Garuda Purana' as his tools to expose various antisocial elements. The film was very well received by the audience and when it was dubbed in Hindi and telecasted, it mesmerized the Hindi watching audience too. IMDB rating is 8.2/10 and a must watch too.

3. Super Deluxe

This is the first movie which comes to my mind when someone asks me to recommend a South Indian Movie. Vijay Sethupati has given one of the best acting performance ever in Indian cinema.  An intense plot split into four subplots with characters spilling across subplots. One subplot involves a married couple Vaembu and Mugil, and a cop named Berlin; another plot involves Shilpa (previously Manickam), her wife Jyothi, their son Rasukutty, and Berlin the cop; the third plot involves Leela, her husband Dhanasekaran alias Arputham and their son Soori, and Mohan; and the last plot involves five friends: Balaji (Gaaji), Soori, Mohan, Vasanth (Mutta Puffs) and Thuyavan. Fahadh Faasil, Samantha, Ramya Krishnan and every character is in top form. IMDB ratings are 8.4/10. This film was also my consideration in Movies which equally deserved to go for Oscars .

4. KGF Chapter 1

Oh, what a film! What a mass entertainer it turned out to be. A movie with an extraordinaire script and action sequences to die for. Plus the raw, hungry, monstrous and badass look of Yash is just icing on the cake. The film shattered all the box office records of Kannada Film Industry (Sandalwood), and announced itself to the world. The film grossing over 275 Crores at the box office is a proof of how a movie is appreciated if made with utter innocence and discipline towards the art. The Chapter 2 of the movie is yet to come and the hype already is fulfilling for the makers. Yash and Prashanth Neel will make sure they don't disappoint the audience who has given them so much love and respect. The Chapter 2 is slated to release on 23rd October 2020, but with the CoronaVirus pandemic, it might as well be pushed forward. The IMDB ratings of this film are 8.2/10, but if you ask a true South Indian Cinema fan, he would rate it 10/10.

5. '96

It's Vijay Sethupati again, but this time with a much appreciated one. He along with Trisha Krishnan in the film, have done superb job in creating one of the best romantic drama till now. Vijay Sethupati plays the role of  K Ramachandran, a photographer, who gets nostalgic after he visits his school in his hometown. During a reunion with his classmates, he meets Janaki, his childhood sweetheart. The film got quite a good amount of positive reviews and it's one of my personal favorites too. The film is rated 8.7/10 on IMBD.

6. Kumbalangi Nights

Undoubtedly the best Malayalam movie I've watched till now. One of the many things which drove me towards watching this film was the role of Fahadh Faasil. He was so much applauded for his psychic role in the film that fans started calling him PsychoShammi, Shammi being his character name in the film. Soubin Shahir and Shane Nigam too have given out of the box performances. Saji, Bonny, Bobby and Franky are siblings who mostly do not get along. However, a series of events forces them to keep their animosity aside and support each other. The film is rated 8.6/10 on IMDB.

7. Rangitaranga

This is the movie which gained so much popularity that it was being considered to be sent for the Oscars from India. It gave quite a break for the debutant director Anup Bhandari. Gautam, a novelist, and his wife, Indhu, visit her ancestral house after she experiences repetitive nightmares. Subsequently, some unnatural occurrences unfold a mystery about Gautam's forgotten past. This mystery thriller was one of my favorite Kannada films and gave numerous amount of chills while watching. The movie is rated 8.4/10 on IMDB.

8. Trance

It's Fahadh Faasil again and I am not including this film because I am a fan of him, but because it has such great message to give. Also FaFa's acting can't be ignored though. FaFa plays role of a  motivational speaker, Viju Prasad, followed by the suicide of his mentallty ill brother Kunjan, moves to Mumbai for better opportunities. While searching, Viju is hired by a pseudo corporate duo, Solom and Isaac, who plans to mint money out of people's blind beliefs to religion. Trance is afilm which shows the class of Malayalam cinema. The color palettes considered in the cinema visually satisfies the viewers and make them want to watch more and again. The film is rated 7.3/10 on IMDB, but is a worth watch.
