Movies which equally deserved to go for Oscars

Gully Boy, India's official entry to Oscars 2020. No doubt this film was great. The story, music, direction, acting everything. But this film was somewhat similar to the plot of Eminem's '8 mile' which makes it not so original film. Why send such a film when there were lot of other original and deserving films made this year? Just because this was a mainstream cinema doesn't justify for the fact that it deserves to qualify for the race to Oscars. Some of the other films which equally deserved to go for Oscars from India were

1. Super Deluxe

This film was one of the best films made in India in 2019. The story was fresh, acting of Vijay Sethupati was excellent and moreover it was too original to be qualified for India's official entry to Oscars. Super Deluxe, on the whole, is a film about life, morality, sex, gender discrimination, marriage, politics and what not. Each character is deeply rooted in reality and has a lot to educate about life. The film gained quite a lot of fame in the south but was totally ignored during the selection process of Oscars.

2. Tummbad

What a film! Such great story writing and equally good execution. Acting of Mohammad Samad and Sohum Shah was commendable. Graphics used were uptight and visually blissful. Tight story which kept us all engaged till the end. A young boy Vinayak Rao is affected by a personal tragedy. His encounter with a wretched old lady who knows of a buried treasure sets him on the path to greed. He grows up to explore the local legend of a monster named Hastar and his gold medallions. The movie changed the face of Indian horror film genre and will be remembered as one of the best movies made in this genre in Indian cinema.

3. Article 15

A film which showed us the dark side of the society boldly with utter discipline and simplicity. Ayushmann Khurrana who plays role of an IPS officer is just as good as it gets. Other prominent actors like Manoj Pahwa, Kumud Mishra also have done a fantastic job. The story revolves around a young IPS officer’s new posting in rural India has him confronting caste disparities and uncomfortable truths in the face of a gruesome crime. When three girls go missing in the fictional village of Lalgaon, two of them are found dead and there is no trace of the third one. Anubhav Sinha was the director of this film and was critically acclaimed for this masterpiece.

4. Kumbalangi Nights

Every now and then comes a film that you fall in love with. Be it the characters, the story, the frames, the music... it lingers on long after the show is over. Madhu C. Narayanan's Kumbalangi Nights is one of those rare gems. Ace cinematographer Shyju Khalid's lifelike frames endear the audience to the island of Kumbalangi. It is complemented well by Sushin Shyam's music, which comes and goes like the sea waves on the beach, and it feels just great. The director turns masculinity and patriarchy a much celebrated topic in Indian cinema into something which is trivial and laughable. Acting of Shane Nigam and Soubin Shahir is way too much to ask for. All over it's one of those films which truly made us feel that it isn't anything different from our normal lives but it is our life.

5. The Tashkent Files

The best film made on political drama in India which boldly characterized the wrong doings of the congress's top family. The story which hit hard on every Indian given the facts that were presented were somewhat true. The story of the mysterious death of India's then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, which was directed by Vivek Agnihotri was too straightforward and questioned the Indian Democracy. This original story, with great characters and even greater stills had the fullest opportunity to get to Oscars. But due to some minor errors seen in some of the scenes, this might have gone out of the race. Cause there's no chance of even a tiny mistake if it's for the Oscars.
